About :Hippolyte et Aricie' is the first opera by Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764). It was composed on a libretto by Abbé Simon-Joseph Pellegrin and premiered in Paris in 1733. Inspired by the tragedies of Euripides and Racine, the opera tells the story of Phaedra and her incestuous love for her son-in-law Hippolytus. 'Cruelle mère des amours' (Cruel mother of love) is one of the famous monologues of this tragic heroine.
